The Story Behind The Style - The Complete History of Designer Jewelry

The story of Designer as an artist actually begins during the sixties when he began to ply his craft working as a sculptor. It was during this time that he met and married his wife Sybil who was to play an influential part in his career as an artist and jewelry designer.

David Yurman and His WifeOne thing that Designer specialized in sculpting was angels and it was during his time as an apprentice for another artist that Designer was convinced by his wife Sybil to create an angel belt buckle out of copper and the results showed the beginnings of what was yet to come.

As time progressed Designer found himself working for a brief period for Cartier and Designer even attempted to get on working for Tiffany Jewelers but believe it or not they turned him down. Soon after his rejection by Tiffany Jewelers he decided to try to design and market his own unique jewelry designs which led to the creation of his original cable bracelet back in the late 1970s.

In fact, it was in the year 1979 that Designer and his wife Sybil partnered in and launched Designer Inc. At that time they both couldn't dream of how big Designer would become in the world of designer jewelry and were really only just hoping to make a decent living with a business that would bring in enough money to pay the bills.

At that particular time during the late seventies and early eighties the disco era was going full blast and the trends in jewelry were gold chains and flashy medallions. So virtually no one was wearing sterling silver jewelry other then perhaps cowboy types that had on sterling silver western belt buckles.

So when Designer came out with his twisted cable sterling silver bracelets he was definitely bucking the trends and taking a big gamble at the time. His persistence did pay off however and within four years he found himself being the recipient of the 1983 InterGold Award which finally gave him the international recognition that he deserved.

David Yurman LogoDesigner has gone on to design and create a virtual cornucopia of jewelry in an almost endless variety of styles for both men, women and even children and he continues to this day to set new standards and explore new fashion territory. For instance Designer has come out with a complete line of high fashion “dog tags” in both sterling silver and yellow 14K gold.

His unique Designer dog tags are a prime example of his ability to think outside of the box when he is exploring new concepts in designer jewelry and he has even created a line of these dog tags that use petrified red dinosaur bone incorporated into them to instill a unique look to each and every piece. By using petrified red dinosaur bone in some of his dog tag creations he has demonstrated once again his experimental nature with regards to jewelry design.
