Imitation David Yurman Necklaces or Real Pieces – What's Right For You?

Imitation pieces can either be exact replicas of the real thing or they can just carry a design element(s) of a particular jewelry designer or a specific piece of jewelry. The latter are called designer-inspired pieces. Since designer jewelry isn’t exactly affordable, the knockoffs or imitation pieces then are borne out of the need and demand of a market for the designer experience without the burden of an overdraft and such.

While imitation pieces are certainly wallet friendly, you cannot hold too many expectations on their quality including their craftsmanship and in their materials. After all, you can’t get from $500 to $20 without making a few trade-offs along the way. In any case, there are some pretty decent imitation jewelry you can find that knocks the ball out of the park in terms of aesthetics and quality.

Albion necklace David

This gemstone pendant necklace is a classic in the David Yurman line and is part of the signature brand’s Albion collection. As you can see both are similar but not the same. The key elements of the albion featured in the imitation piece are the gemstone and the pave detail. At roughly $20, this designer-inspired jewelry (shown left) saves on the materials by using cubic zirconia (CZ) in place of real diamonds and amethyst and by using a combination of both brass and silver with rhodium plating for the metal instead of sterling silver. The original (shown right) costs $625.

The inspired version (shown left) is listed at $30, give or take, and the original (shown right) is at a staggering $4,500.00. The difference? Faux pearls are used and set on rhodium plated silver while the original “Bijoux necklace” uses South sea pearl set on sterling silver and 18k gold. For thousands of dollars less, you get the look and a longer necklace too. The inspired piece is 48 inches long as opposed to the Bijoux’s 36 inches.

David Yurman cable link necklace

You don’t have to wish wistfully over achieving this classic cable-link look (shown right) from David Yurman (priced at $2,250) because you can get it for just a little over $20. Sure you have to give up the bonded 18k gold and the sterling silver for the rhodium plated silver of the inspired version (shown left) but at the rate of how this necklace is replicated, I doubt anyone would notice at first glance.

These are just some of the masterfully done versions of David Yurman necklaces. To get the best deal, it is always wise to scrutinize the original items (even if it is just throug the internet) first before checking out the inspired pieces. This will give you a good idea of what to look for and what features you’d be be prepared for the trade-offs.

The Most Popular Styles: Hearts, Pearls, and Chains

David Yurman’s most popular necklace styles would have to be those that make use of the hearts and pearl enhancers and those with the cable link chains.

Hearts, no matter what the designer, have always been a choice style in accessories and in jewelry, in particular, for its timelessness and versatility. David Yurman takes this common style to whole new levels by pairing it up with the label’s signature cable style and pave diamonds as well as using it as mold for pearls and precious stones.

David Yurman heart locketI’m particularly fond of DY’s take on the usually cheesy heart locket. Its cable engravings make this hackneyed style limelight-worthy.

The price points of these heart styles are $270, $400+ and $3,000. 18k gold chains and pendants tend to be more expensive.

Pearls have always been credited for its ability to make any jewelry accessible by any occasion, any age and any era. This is what makes it a must-have and a staple in every jewelry collection. David Yurman brings this timelessness in its trend-setting layers, its simple chain-and-pendant collection, its elaborate cable-link chains and its traditional string of pearls necklaces.

David Yurman pearl necklaces

David Yurman commonly uses cultured pearls but in rare occasions splurge on the South Seas. Depending on the kind of pearl, the size and the material used on the chain, David Yurman pearl necklaces can cost from roughly $400 to $3,000.

About David Yurman Enhancers

One of David Yurman’s signature styles includes its use of precious stone enhancers. You can see these strapped on an earring, dangling on a bracelet and embedded on a ring. The necklaces are no exception. In fact, I think they carry these enhancers best. The following are just some of the more classical takes of these enhancers.

(left to right) Wheaton, Cerise and Albion

The precious stone is usually set in place in faceted style and can be any of the following: amethyst (purple and lavender), topaz (light blue and dark blue), hematite, citrine (orange), black onyx, cabochon turquoise, white agate, prasiolite, faceted gold, cabochon ruby moonlight, rose gold morganite and 18k bonded gold. These are just some of the precious stones available in David Yurman’s collection now but you can be sure more will be added to the list in the future.

For Men: Dog Tags

Jewelry on men are tricky, as far as I’m concerned. While women can create a bang by adopting a “more is more” campaign, men will always do better by leaning towards the “less is more” philosophy. David Yurman makes making a fashion statement for men easier and more accessible through its dog tag necklaces. A wide range of personalities are covered in its unique use of a variety of exotic stones and unusual layout of materials.

If you’re the kind of guy who likes to keep it as simple as possible, a sterling silver dog tag with a small DY logo embedded on it would be the best choice. For the adventurous and those who want a little more of their personality to show, the choices vary from silver cognac diamonds with carved cables as a dog tag pendant to Picasso stones, dinosaur bones, textured tags with amulets, Pietersite, malachite, tiger’s eye and the like.

Most of the tags are available in sterling silver chains but there are a few styles that are available in 18k yellow gold such as this dog tag with a black onyx pendant.

David Yurman can take you from casual statement to a flashy arrival and at prices that starts at a little over $450 to a whooping $5,200.
